URGENT REQUEST!
Pressing Issues Make It More Important Than Ever To Support Downwinders:
- The threat of new nuclear
weapons development and eventual resumption of nuclear testing at the Nevada
Test Site it will require.
- The continuing fight to bring justice to DOE workers, downwinders, and others affected by radiation. Recently the DOE admitted "partial responsibility" for making hundreds of workers ill from exposure to radiation on the job. In effect it was admitting that it lied for many years to the American public. Without groups like Downwinders forcing the truth to come out into the plain light of day, we would still be in darkness.
- The recent disclosure by the National Cancer Institute that thousands of Americans received high doses of radiation from fallout during atomic testing in the Cold War era makes our mission much larger in scope and more challenging than ever before. Downwinders continues its historic fight for the rights of the victims of this national disaster.
- To continue the fight against "environmental racism" and the locating of nuclear facilities and dumps which threaten Native Americans and other minorities across the nation. Recent activities include fighting against reprocessing of nuclear materials adjacent to the White Mesa Ute Reservation near Blanding, Utah and transportation of nuclear waste through the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in Southeastern Idaho.
- Fighting
for the citizens of Utah and Nevada to keep the West from becoming a
high-level nuclear waste dump for commercial spent fuel. Downwinders
has actively opposed the efforts of Private Fuels Storage, a consortium
of nuclear utilities including Northern States Power, to place the nation's
commercial reactor waste at a site in the Skull Valley, Utah Goshute
Indian Reservation. We have also opposed all efforts to site a spent
fuel repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.
Funds are desperately needed now so that our staff can continue to work full time for the rights of radiation survivors and victims, and against those who would turn the West into a contaminated, radioactive waste dump. Your donation is needed for:

and informational services for radiation and fallout victims.
- Transportation expenses as we travel the West aiding victims of fallout and radiation.
- Support
for Native Americans opposed to the onslaught of predatory corporations
that seek to contaminate their sacred lands with nuclear waste.
